After months of tinkering, Carbunkleworld.com is finally live.
I built the site with Wix. Honestly, no one’s more surprised about that than me. Every Wix site I’d ever seen looked like it was built at the dawn of the Internet by some high school kid..
Still, here we are.
I tried other “no-code” site builders first. Framer, Webflow, a few others, because I can’t actually code. But their idea of “no-code” was so confusing it felt like I’d have been better off just learning to code instead.
Having previously made websites with Wordpress, I considered using them again, but the flashbacks of daily brute-force login attacks and endless plug-in updates made that decision easy. Never again.
That left me with the “fast food franchise” of site builders: Squarespace and Wix. I didn’t like Squarespace (for reasons I can’t even remember now), so Wix it was.
And you know what? It’s actually been great. Wix is intuitive, flexible, and it let me build the site exactly how I wanted. It’s not perfect as they’re constantly trying to sell you upgrades or add-ons but it’s tolerable.
The design might look a bit old-fashioned. I’m not up to speed on what’s trending in web design, but I hammered it into a shape I’m happy with. That might change one day, but that is not this day.
Also, I completely ignored mobile optimization. Wix tried to nudge me into it, but I refused. Sorry, phone people, my glorious words and pictures are best viewed on a computer. For now.
Overall, I’d say Wix gets a solid “mostly recommend.” The pricing is a bit steep, and the upselling is annoying, but the actual building process is simple and surprisingly enjoyable.
For a while, Carbunkle! lived on Campfire, but I grew frustrated with its interface. It started to feel like it was stifling my creativity. Props to them for what they’re trying to do, but I needed to strike out on my own.
So now Carbunkle! The World of Adventure officially resides at carbunkleworld.com.
I really wanted the domian of just carbunkle.com, but someone’s sitting on it and wants $6,000. I can’t imagine why though, except for literally me who else would want it? It’s not even a real word. They had it way before me though, so they can keep it, at least till they like lower the price to like $25 or something. Then I’ll buy it.
Maybe.
